Guidance for Telugu students navigating US universities, visas, careers, and community.
GMA Student Support Network
GMA maintains a dedicated support network for Telugu students in the United States — from new F-1 visa holders arriving for the first time, to graduate students navigating OPT and H-1B transitions, to undergraduates looking for internship and mentorship opportunities.
F-1 Visa: US Port of Entry Guide
Arriving in the US as an international student can be stressful. Here is what you need to know at the Port of Entry (PoE).
Documents to Carry
Valid passport with F-1 visa · Form I-20 (original, DSO-signed) · SEVIS fee receipt (I-901) · University admission letter · Financial proof (bank statements/sponsor letter) · Education certificates · DSO contact info · US address
At Primary Inspection
Answer all CBP officer questions clearly and honestly. Having a visa does NOT guarantee admission — the CBP officer makes the final decision. Do not volunteer unnecessary information.
Secondary Inspection
If referred to secondary inspection — remain calm. It is routine for many students and does not mean you have done anything wrong. Contact your DSO if detained beyond 2 hours.
First Contact in the US
Save your DSO's number before landing. Save GMA Helpline (855-686-6878). Connect with your local GMA chapter — many have airport pickup networks for new students.
Immigration Guidance
GMA provides immigration guidance through partnered immigration attorneys for members navigating:
- F-1 OPT/STEM OPT — Application timeline, documentation, employer requirements
- H-1B Cap Lottery — Registration, selection process, employer sponsorship
- H-1B Green Card — PERM, I-140, priority dates, adjustment of status
- Dependent Visas — H-4, F-2 — bringing family members
- Citizenship — N-400 application, interview preparation
Note: GMA provides general guidance and referrals — not legal advice. Always consult a licensed immigration attorney for your specific situation.
