Festivals & Cultural Celebrations
Celebrating our heritage at every milestone — connecting the Munnurukapu community through culture.
Telugu Festival Calendar
The Munnuru Kapu community observes all major Telugu and Indian festivals with devotion and joy. GMA organizes or coordinates celebrations for each of these festivals across our chapters — keeping traditions alive for our children and grandchildren, far from home.
Major Festivals We Celebrate
Ugadi — Telugu New Year
March/April — The most sacred festival for Telugu families. Panchanga Sravanam (New Year forecast reading), Ugadi Pachadi (six-flavor chutney symbolizing life's emotions), cultural programs, and community feast. Astrologers and priests are invited to community events.
Bathukamma — Flower Festival
September/October — Telangana's magnificent flower festival celebrated for nine days (Navaratri). Women create elaborate Bathukamma (goddess of life) arrangements from seasonal flowers, sing traditional Bathukamma songs, and celebrate womanhood. GMA Vanitha leads this celebration.
Sankranti — Harvest Festival
January 14-16 — Three days of celebration: Bhogi (burning old things, welcoming new), Sankranti (thanksgiving with Pongal feast and Harikatha), Kanuma (cattle worship honoring working animals). Kite flying competitions and Gangireddulu (decorated bull) performances.
Dasara — Vijayadasami
October — Celebrating the victory of good over evil. Saraswati Puja (goddess of learning), Ayudha Puja (honoring tools and instruments), Vijayadasami procession, and Dandiya Raas. Special significance for the Munnuru Kapu community's warrior heritage.
Diwali — Festival of Lights
October/November — Lakshmi Puja, lighting of clay diyas, fireworks, exchange of sweets, and community gathering. Celebrated with Abhyanga Snanam (morning oil bath), new clothes, and family traditions passed down through generations.
Sri Venkateshwara Kalyanam
A sacred celestial wedding ceremony of Lord Venkateshwara and Goddess Padmavathi — traditionally performed at Tirumala. GMA organizes community Kalyanam ceremonies at Mahasabha and special events.
Ganesh Chaturthi
August/September — Installing and worshipping Ganesh idols for 1-11 days, culminating in Visarjana (immersion). Community events with bhajans, prasadam distribution, and cultural programs.
Bonalu
July/August — Telangana's distinctive festival honoring Goddess Mahakali. Women carry decorated pots (Bonalu) as offerings, traditional processions, and Ghatam performances. Unique to Telangana Telugu families.
