Own the Room

The trick

A talk is a conversation, not a recital. Make the audience feel involved with energy (your enthusiasm is contagious), questions (a show of hands, "have you ever…?"), and connection (eye contact, using "you," speaking like you're talking to one friend). Watch the room and adjust — if eyes glaze, pick up energy, tell a quick story, or ask a question. Treat a presentation as an enlarged conversation.

Worked examples

🎤 Speaking homework: Give a 60-second talk with TWO engagement moves: one question ("Have you ever…?") and one energy shift (get louder/excited on a key line). Practice as if a friend is sitting across from you.
