Find Your Voice

The trick

Your voice is an instrument — most beginners play one flat note. Three dials change everything: pace, volume, and pause. Slow down on important points; a pause after a key idea lets the audience absorb it and makes you sound in control. The biggest voice-killer is filler words ("um," "like," "you know"). The fix: replace the filler with a pause. Silence feels awkward to you but sounds thoughtful to them. Record yourself and count your "ums" — awareness alone cuts them dramatically.

Worked examples

🎤 Speaking homework: Record 60 seconds and count your filler words out loud. Record again with one rule: every time an "um" comes, close your mouth and pause instead. Compare.
