Prepare for a career conversation
A thoughtful conversation with someone whose work you respect can help you understand a role, industry, or next learning step. It is not a job request; it is a chance to listen, learn, and build a genuine connection.
A clear question is a strong beginning.
Before you ask for time, decide what you hope to understand. “What skills helped you grow in this field?” is more useful than a broad request for career advice.
Prepare in three steps
- Name your purpose. Write one sentence about the role, field, or decision you want to understand.
- Choose five questions. Prioritize the questions that would be most useful if the conversation is short.
- Learn the basics first. Read about the person’s work and the organization or field so you can ask informed questions.
During and after
Introduce yourself briefly, be mindful of the person’s time, and ask questions that invite their perspective. Afterward, send a specific thank-you, note one useful insight, and decide one realistic next action for yourself.
